Sculptural Metalworking: Youth Edition
Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 1:00 PM - Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 4:00 PM (EST)
Somerville, United States
This is a class specifically geared as an introduction to the wonderful world of sculptural metalworking and welding. Each class, a new skill and a matching sculpture assignment is dispensed to exercise the use of the tool, and creative thinking in the medium. By the end, students have proficient knowledge in the steel shop and the creative process to execute their own designs!
Students will learn how to use a MIG welder and various supporting tools (clamps, grinders, sanders, etc.) to produce sculptural art pieces of their own design. Kit and instructor-directed projects are also available if students would like a less independent class experience.
To train students to safely and comprehensively operate the tools at Artisan's Asylum while also empowering them to think creatively in a new medium.
Students will need a long sleeved, natural fiber shirt (flannel or zip hoodie) to dirty and use as protection in the shop, as well as long jeans. Steel, helmets, gloves, and other safety gear is provided. (If you have a small head, you might want a rimless cap to fit the helmet band)
Ecco is a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. She is a local artist working in an array of media with a focus in steel. Her work includes large scale interactive public art, kinetic sculptures, and costume accessories (like horns and wings), and jewelry.
